Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive and behavioral impairment. The only way to make a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is through an autopsy or brain biopsy. In routine practice, the diagnosis is usually made on the basis of a patient's history and mental status examination, with clinical, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging assessments. Patients are typically diagnosed during the mild stage of disease.
