Benzodiazepines are often used to treat anxiety, sleep disorders, seizure disorders, and ethanol withdrawal, among other conditions. Oral benzodiazepine overdose alone, without co-ingestions, rarely results in significant morbidity or mortality. However, patients often do not take them as prescribed, use them in combination with other medications or substances, or both. The US Food and Drug Administration recently required an update to the boxed warning on benzodiazepines to include the risks of abuse, misuse, addiction, physical dependence, and withdrawal reactions.

The prescribing of benzodiazepines during office visits has dramatically increased over the past decade. Are you familiar with key aspects regarding their use and abuse, including recommendations for prescribing and deprescribing? Take this short quiz to test your knowledge.
