Lyme disease is a multisystem illness transmitted to humans via tick bites, from infected ticks of the genus Ixodes. Symptoms often include a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans, as well as headache, fever, and fatigue. Although rarely fatal, if not properly treated, Lyme disease can affect the joints, heart, and nervous system. Even after patients complete treatment, lingering symptoms may persist for longer than 6 months.
Given the potential for serious complications, and the fact that incidence is increasing in certain regions due to climate change and other factors, clinical recognition of this disease is crucial. Are you familiar with key aspects of Lyme disease, as well as best practices for diagnosis and treatment? Refresh and test your knowledge with this short quiz.
