When TD is diagnosed, reduce the dose or discontinue the causative medication, if possible. Primary prevention of TD is recommended by using the lowest effective dose of an antipsychotic medication for the shortest period. The risk for a permanent movement disorder must be weighed against the risk of exacerbating psychosis. It should be noted that TD may worsen initially after neuroleptics are discontinued.
