Older female patients appear to be particularly susceptible to the development of TD.

Other populations at increased risk for the development of TD include elderly patients, Black patients, patients with mood disorders, intellectual disability, or central nervous system injury, as well as patients with a history of akathisia, parkinsonism, or acute dystonic reactions.
