Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is characterized by deficiency of the exocrine pancreatic enzymes, resulting in maldigestion. The etiology of this condition includes benign and malignant pancreatic causes, as well as nonpancreatic causes. The diagnosis of EPI is primarily clinical, and often goes undetected because the signs and symptoms are nonspecific and mirror those of other gastrointestinal disorders. In other cases, signs and symptoms are difficult to detect due to dietary restrictions. Therefore, diagnosis is aided by identifying at-risk patient groups and recognizing suggestive physical manifestations.
How well can you detect the signs and symptoms of EPI? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
