The results of a prospective, longitudinal cohort study suggest that EPI is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events in patients with CP. The incidence rate ratio for cardiovascular events in patients with EPI compared with those without the condition was 3.67.

A study examining the use of endoscopic therapy in patients with CP determined that this therapy is most useful in patients with pancreatic duct stones and dilation and should be used as first-line treatment for these patients; however, it cannot be recommended for all patients with CP.

Toskes and colleagues determined that CP patients with EPI may benefit from a low dose of pancrelipase whereas a high dose might be appropriate for patients with more severe EPI.
