Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by a persistent decline in lung function that is associated with progressive symptoms, functional impairment, and a propensity for respiratory infections or exacerbations. Much of the morbidity and mortality associated with COPD is attributed to exacerbations. Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study suggest that 328 million individuals are living with COPD globally, and it is already the third leading cause of death worldwide, something that the World Health Organization had not predicted to occur until 2030. Affected patients experience significant impact on quality of life, and the disease confers substantial financial and healthcare resource burdens. Despite its high prevalence, studies suggest that COPD may be vastly underdiagnosed, which can lead to negative outcomes.
