Despite advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, HIV remains a major global public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 40 million deaths have been attributed to HIV, including 650,000 deaths in 2021 alone. It is estimated that 38.4 million individuals around the world are currently living with HIV/AIDS; among them, 28.7 million are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although ART options have dramatically and steadily improved over the years, HIV drug resistance continues to be a challenge that can lead to virologic failure and increased HIV morbidity and mortality.
