Despite advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, HIV remains a major global public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), > 40 million deaths have been attributed to HIV, including 630,000 deaths in 2022 alone. It is estimated that 39 million individuals around the world are currently living with HIV/AIDS; among them, 29.6 million are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although ART options have dramatically and steadily improved over the years, HIV drug resistance continues to be a challenge that can lead to virologic failure and increased HIV morbidity and mortality.
