Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is the most common chronic immune-mediated inflammatory polyneuropathy. The condition is characterized by symmetrical involvement, with proximal and distal muscle weakness. The course is progressive, relapsing-remitting, or monophasic. In addition to typical CIPD, there are atypical subtypes of disease, or variants, which might have distinct immunopathogenesis and treatment responses.
CIDP is a causally treatable form of acquired neuropathy. The mainstay of treatment is immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory intervention, and if associated conditions are identified (HIV infection, lupus, paraproteinemia, and lymphoma), co-management of these diseases is indicated as well.
