Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common inflammatory skin disease among children. This chronic disorder is immunologic in nature and is characterized by pruritic lesions. The condition arises by age 5 years in most pediatric patients and often starts in infants aged 2-6 months. About half of affected children outgrow the disease by age 7. In the most severe cases, the condition can adversely affect growth and development.
