More than 1 billion individuals worldwide are affected by migraine, a complex and highly disabling neurovascular disorder. Migraine is characterized by frequent recurrent, throbbing headache episodes and accompanying symptoms. Chronic migraine is defined as the presence of headache occurring on 15 or more days per month for more than 3 months, which, on at least 8 days per month, has the elements of migraine. It is estimated that more than 10% of all persons with migraine experience chronic migraine, which can negatively affect many aspects of life, such as marital, parenting, romantic, and family relationships, career/financial achievement and stability, and overall health. To minimize the burden associated with chronic migraine, experts recommend preventive treatment.
