More than 1 billion individuals worldwide are affected by migraine, a complex and highly disabling neurovascular disorder. Migraine is characterized by frequent recurrent, throbbing headache episodes and accompanying symptoms. Chronic migraine is defined as the presence of headache occurring on 8 or more days per month for more than 3 months, which, on at least 8 days per month, has the elements of migraine. It is estimated that more than 10% of all persons with migraine experience chronic migraine, which can negatively affect many aspects of life, such as marital, parenting, romantic, and family relationships, career/financial achievement and stability, and overall health. To minimize the burden associated with chronic migraine, experts recommend preventive treatment.
