Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. Iron deficiency anemia develops when body stores of iron drop too low to support normal red blood cell production, a state that may be caused by poor dietary intake of iron, impaired absorption of oral iron, chronic blood loss from gastrointestinal or other sources, or loss of iron from the body in the urine. A high clinical suspicion for gastrointestinal cancer, the most serious potential cause of iron deficiency anemia, should be employed during workup. The cornerstone of management is iron replacement therapy.
