Although TRD is a heterogenous disorder, nonremission or partial remission after a prior depressive episode and nonresponse to the first antidepressant ever trialed have been identified as potential risk factors for TRD. Other factors commonly associated with TRD include younger age at onset, older current age, longer duration of illness, more frequent and recurrent episodes of depression, and greater severity of depression.
