Functional gastrointestinal disorders have been associated with a significant increase in the risk for TRD. In addition, higher doses of antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and Z-drugs in the early course of MDD increase TRD risk.

Females with depression are more likely to experience TRD than males, although the disorder is common in both genders. The most frequent comorbid Axis I disorders seen in patients with TRD are social phobia (31.3%), generalized anxiety disorder (23.6%), posttraumatic stress disorder (20.6%), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (14.3%).
