Streptococcus pneumoniae infections are a common cause of bacterial infection in children. Pediatric infections caused by this pathogen include otitis media, sinusitis, occult bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, pericarditis, and peritonitis. Pneumococci may also cause osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, pericarditis, and peritonitis.

The organism is usually found in the nose and throat as a commensal in 20%-40% of healthy children and is found in particular abundance in locations with large numbers of infants and young children, such as day care centers and preschools. The organism attaches to the nasopharyngeal cells via the interaction of bacterial surface adhesions.
