From 1998 through 2018, the overall invasive pneumococcal disease rate among children less than 5 years old decreased by 93% in the United States. Invasive pneumococcal disease caused by the serotypes covered by childhood vaccination decreased by 98% in children younger than 5 years during this same period.
Vaccination has also led to decreased rates of invasive disease (45% overall; 75% in children younger than 5 years). In addition, "herd immunity" has led to decreased rates of disease in older children and adults.
