Pneumococcal infections are caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, a gram-positive, catalase-negative organism simply called pneumococcus. S pneumoniae is the most frequent cause of community-acquired pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, bacteremia, and otitis media. It can also cause sinusitis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, peritonitis, and endocarditis. Each of these conditions can carry serious complications.

Pneumococcal pneumonia leads to an estimated 150,000 hospitalizations for adults each year and accounts for $1.3 billion in direct medical costs (65% of direct costs for all adult pneumococcal disease treatment).

What do you know about S pneumoniae infections and their treatment? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
