The CDC recommends routine administration of PPSV23 for all adults 65 years and older. The CDC also recommends administration of PCV13 based on shared decision-making for adults 65 years and older who do not have an immunocompromising condition, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or cochlear implant, and who have never received a dose of PCV13.

Any patient who has received a dose of PPSV23 before age 65 should receive one final dose of the vaccine when they are 65 years or older. This last dose should be administered at least 5 years after the prior PPSV23 dose.
