Although the etiology is largely unknown, some lines of evidence indicate that genetic factors and heredity play a role in mycosis fungoides. Independent studies have reported on a strong linkage disequilibrium between mycosis fungoides and specific HLA class II allotypes in White persons and Ashkenazi Jewish individuals, indicating the existence of a significant genetic predisposition.
