Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia. Iron deficiency may arise as the result of either reduced total body iron (absolute deficiency) or diminished iron supply to erythropoietic and/or other organs with preserved stores (functional iron deficiency). Iron deficiency anemia develops when the body’s iron stores drop severely enough to diminish erythropoiesis. Among its causes are inadequate dietary iron, impaired iron absorption, loss of body iron in the urine, or various types of bleeding.
