Bipolar I disorder is a chronic mood disorder characterized by at least one manic episode lasting a minimum of 7 days. Most individuals also experience depressive episodes, typically lasting at least 2 weeks. Agitation, or severe restlessness, is a common and costly component of many psychiatric disorders including bipolar I disorder. It is often expressed as irritability, hyperexcitability, physical or verbal aggression, and nonaggressive behaviors, such as wandering. Early recognition and use of appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies to relieve the symptoms of agitation can prevent the emergence of harmful behavior and may alleviate the suffering as well as the economic burden associated with bipolar disorder.
