Caloric restriction can be a healthy dietary strategy for patients who may benefit from weight loss. According to AHA/ACC/TOS guidelines, various dietary approaches can produce weight loss. A diet to achieve reduced calorie intake can be prescribed for patients with obesity or who are overweight and would benefit from weight loss as part of a comprehensive lifestyle intervention. Although weight loss strategies should be tailored to the individual, the following are generally recommended:
A 1200-1500 kcal/d diet for women
A 1500-1800 kcal/d diet for men
A 500-750 kcal/d energy deficit
An evidence-based diet that restricts certain food types in order to create an energy deficit via reduced food intake
