Crohn disease is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by cycles of relapse and remission. Asymptomatic periods can last for several months and up to several years. Initiation of early treatment is critical in preventing tissue damage. The etiology of this immune-related disorder comprises genetic, immunologic, and environmental factors. The incidence and prevalence of Crohn disease are increasing worldwide.

Treatment decisions for Crohn disease should consider the severity, location, and subtype of disease. There is an emerging focus on determining which patients are at risk for severe disease and may require earlier and more aggressive therapies.
