Type 2 diabetes is a global health crisis, affecting 537 million adults worldwide; by 2045, that number is expected to exceed 700 million, a 46% increase. Diabetes significantly affects individuals' functional capacities and quality of life and leads to substantial morbidity and premature mortality. Recent data showed that more than one third of diabetes-related deaths occur in people younger than 60 years. Type 2 diabetes comprises an array of dysfunctions characterized by hyperglycemia and resulting from the combination of insulin resistance, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. For many patients, blood glucose control, blood pressure, and other treatment targets remain suboptimal, increasing the risk for microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic complications.
