If CGM results appear to be discordant with clinical circumstances, BGM is required for confirmation.

When used as an adjunct to preprandial and postprandial BGM, CGM can help to achieve A1c targets in diabetes and pregnancy.

Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis has been reported with all devices that attach to the skin, including real-time CGM and intermittently scanned CGM. Patch testing may identify the cause of the contact dermatitis. Identifying and eliminating tape allergens can help patients comfortably use CGM devices and may enhance adherence. Use of an implanted sensor may help avoid skin reactions in individuals who are sensitive to tape.

Randomized controlled trial data on real-time CGM use in individuals with type 2 diabetes who are on multiple daily injections and basal insulin have shown a consistent reduction in A1c but not a reduction in hypoglycemia rates.
