According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than half a billion people worldwide are living with diabetes. Among them, more than 90% have type 2 diabetes. When patients with diabetes develop an acute severe illness necessitating intensive care, most will experience uncontrolled blood glucose levels. Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are associated with worse clinical outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. Treatment algorithms and monitoring strategies should be focused on preventing adverse events while targeting glycemic control.
