Ginseng is often used by those who want to increase their energy, strengthen their immune response, or treat issues related to sexual performance and fertility in men. Some evidence suggests that it may be effective in improving cognitive function, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation.

Because ginseng affects the coagulation cascade, inhibiting platelet aggregation and increasing thrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time, its use in patients with bleeding disorders is not recommended. Some studies have shown that ginseng's inhibition of platelet aggregation is possibly irreversible. Because it directly increases warfarin clearance, coadministration is contraindicated.
