Obesity is a rising health issue that has reached pandemic proportions. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries. Additionally, approximately one third of the global population is now classified as overweight or obese. Overweight and obesity, especially intra-abdominal adiposity, are associated with numerous cardiometabolic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and heart failure, as well as various musculoskeletal, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and psychiatric complications. As a result, obesity has major implications for individuals living with the disease and for society, including healthcare costs. Pharmacotherapy is an effective but underutilized adjunct to diet and exercise in the management of obesity.
