Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is estimated to affect between 300 and 400 million people globally and is the third leading cause of death worldwide. The defining feature of COPD is irreversible airflow limitation during forced expiration. Typically, patients present with a combination of symptoms of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma, including cough, wheezing, and breathlessness. As a result, COPD is often underdiagnosed.
