Among the general comorbid conditions, cardiometabolic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (even in adolescents), diabetes, and obesity are a common source of morbidity and mortality for patients with bipolar disorder. A population-based study found that hypertension (31.1%); asthma (11.7%); and diabetes, obesity, and hypothyroidism (11% each) were the most prevalent medical comorbidities found in inpatients with bipolar disorder. Drug abuse (33.5%), anxiety disorders (31.8%), and alcohol abuse (18.3%) were the most prevalent psychiatric comorbidities.
