Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of respiratory tract infection in infants, young children, and older or immunocompromised adults. It is currently responsible for 45%-90% of episodes of bronchiolitis and 15%-35% of pneumonia in children 5 years or younger. According to Chatterjee and colleagues, more than half of children who are infected with RSV are infected by their first birthday. Each year in the United States, RSV leads to approximately 58,000 hospitalizations with 100-500 deaths among children younger than 5 years.
