Bladder cancer is the 10th most common cancer worldwide, primarily affecting those over the age of 55 years. Important risk factors for developing bladder cancer are tobacco smoking and occupational exposure to aromatic amines and ionizing radiation. Although most cases are identified during the early stages, approximately 5% are metastatic at diagnosis. Despite progress with chemotherapy regimens, metastatic disease has a poor prognosis with a low response to current treatment options. Over the past decade, multiple new medications have been approved with the aim of prolonging life, lowering the risk for recurrence, and improving quality of life.
