Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders of the retina with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 2000. Mutations in genes that are responsible for retinal function cause significant visual impairment, with profound impact on an individual's ability to interact with the world. Advances in molecular genetics have expanded the understanding and knowledge of genes contributing to IRD, providing more accurate diagnoses and conceivably the development of treatments to target retinal degeneration.
