Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders of the retina characterized by photoreceptor degeneration or dysfunction. More than 2 million people worldwide are affected by IRDs. Patients with IRDs usually present with severe vision loss, which can be progressive. Disease onset ranges from birth to late adulthood. Most cases of IRDs are associated with genetic inheritance patterns (autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked, and mitochondrial) and mutations in 280 genes. Advances in molecular genetics have expanded the understanding and knowledge of genes contributing to IRD, providing more accurate diagnoses and conceivably the development of treatments to target retinal degeneration.
