An increase in the worldwide prevalence of obesity has led to the simultaneous increase in type 2 diabetes. This condition is one of the fastest-growing chronic diseases, affecting nearly half a billion individuals worldwide. Obesity is a modifiable risk factor in the development and progression of diabetes with strong and consistent evidence that weight loss can have a disease-modifying effect. In addition, weight loss in patients with prediabetes may prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, type 2 diabetes is associated with complex metabolic dysfunctions that can result in increased morbidity, mortality, and cost, making it a public health priority.
