The prevalence of both type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes (GDM) is increasing dramatically in conjunction with the worldwide obesity epidemic. Hyperglycemia because of pregnancy-induced and preexisting insulin resistance is associated with significantly greater maternal and fetal risks. In addition, diabetes in pregnancy may increase the risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes in offspring later in life. To reduce the risk for complications, patients with type 2 diabetes require intensive monitoring and close titration of treatment beginning early in pregnancy.

How familiar are you with GDM and type 2 diabetes after pregnancy? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
