The prevalence of both type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes is increasing dramatically in conjunction with the worldwide obesity epidemic. Hyperglycemia, owing to pregnancy-induced and preexisting insulin resistance, is associated with significantly greater maternal and fetal risks.
