Cerebrovascular disease affects approximately 20%-40% of patients with type 2 diabetes and remains the leading risk factor for stroke. Insulin resistance is an established independent risk factor for the development of cerebrovascular disease. Patients with diabetes are two to six times more susceptible to cerebrovascular complications, and this risk is further magnified in patients with additional comorbidities, such as obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, which often coexist in patients with type 2 diabetes. Management of cardiovascular risk factors and lifestyle changes can reduce the risk for stroke and improve patient outcomes.
