Cerebrovascular disease affects approximately 20%-40% of patients with type 2 diabetes and remains the leading risk factor for stroke. Obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia often coexist in patients with type 2 diabetes, further increasing the risk. In fact, the risk for stroke is two- to fivefold higher in patients with type 2 diabetes, compared with individuals without diabetes. Management of cardiovascular risk factors and lifestyle changes can reduce the risk for stroke and improve outcomes.
