Because ketoacidosis, including fatal cases, has been reported in patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors, including empagliflozin, consider factors that may predispose a patient to ketoacidosis before initiating therapy. These include any cause of pancreatic insulin deficiency, such as alcohol abuse or extreme caloric restriction.
