Thrombocytopenia in adults is defined as a platelet count < 150,000/µL. Although the correlation of bleeding risk and severity of thrombocytopenia remains uncertain, surgical bleeding can occur with a platelet count < 50,000/µL, and spontaneous bleeding can occur with a platelet count < 10,000/µL.
