Over one third of a woman's life is lived in the postmenopausal state. Most women enter menopause between the ages of 49 and 52 years, with an average age of 51 years. Early menopause is defined as menopause in women < 45 years of age; primary ovarian insufficiency is defined as menopause in women < 40 years of age, occurring in approximately 1% of women.
