A research letter published in JAMA reports that over the past two decades, use of over-the-counter melatonin in the United States increased fivefold. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999-2000 to 2017-2018 suggest that respondents aged 20 years or older reported increasing melatonin use (0.4% in 1999-2000 [95% CI, 0.2%-1.0%] vs 2.1% in 2017-2018 [95% CI, 1.5%-2.9%]).
