Systemic sclerosis is a rare and often devastating autoimmune connective tissue disease characterized by vascular damage, inflammation, and fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Its geographic prevalence varies, but as of 2019, North America and Europe have reported that 13.5-44.3 and 7.2-33.9 per 100,000 individuals are impacted, respectively. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is identified in most patients with systemic sclerosis and is a leading cause of systemic sclerosis-related mortality. Early recognition of ILD paves the way for early therapeutic intervention, which has the potential to improve patient outcomes.
