According to a 2019 consensus paper by the Multiple Sclerosis Coalition, treatment with a DMT should be initiated as soon as possible after a diagnosis of RRMS. This is because DMTs have shown beneficial effects in patients with RRMS, including reduced frequency and severity of clinical attacks. These agents appear to reduce the progression of disability as well as the accumulation of lesions within the brain and spinal cord.
