Hyperkalemia refers to serum potassium concentration that is above the upper limit of the normal range, typically > 5-5.5 mEq/L. Although mild hyperkalemia generally does not produce symptoms, significantly high potassium levels can cause respiratory paralysis or cardiac arrest and can quickly be fatal. Owing to a lack of distinctive signs and symptoms, hyperkalemia can be difficult to diagnose and is frequently discovered as an incidental laboratory finding. Thus, awareness about risks for this condition is important. Do you know what to watch for and best practices for identifying and managing hyperkalemia? Make sure you are prepared by taking this quick quiz.
