As of June 2022, nearly 6.3 million deaths worldwide were directly attributed to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the full mortality associated directly or indirectly with the COVID-19 pandemic was closer to 15 million deaths. Vaccination against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is of the utmost importance for ending the global pandemic, and several effective vaccines across multiple platforms have been rolled out internationally. While > 11 billion vaccine doses have been administered to date, the emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 (eg, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, as well as Omicron and its subvariants) have raised concerns about the efficacy of the currently used vaccines against these variants. Around the world, scientists are working to learn more about these variants, the ease with which they can be transmitted, and the efficacy of currently authorized vaccines against them.
