As of early August 2022, nearly 6.4 million deaths worldwide were directly attributed to COVID-19, and the World Health Organization estimated that the full mortality associated directly or indirectly with the COVID-19 pandemic was closer to 15 million deaths. Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is of the utmost importance for ending the global pandemic, and several effective vaccines across multiple platforms have been rolled out internationally. Although > 12 billion vaccine doses have been administered to date, emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 (eg, Omicron and its subvariants) have raised concerns about the efficacy of the currently used vaccines against these variants.
